Music is woven into the fabric of everyday life from the car radio to the grocery store. It's a universal language with the power to evoke deep emotional and cognitive responses. Health Harmonies combines personalized music with guided reflection to help you manage stress and pain in a simple, accessible way.
Try a Check-In Learn MoreMusic's lyrics, rhythm, and melodies can influence emotional well-being, promote physical health in pain management, and have great potential to be useful in non-pharmacological interventions for a wide range of conditions. As research continues to explore its therapeutic potential, music is increasingly recognized not only as a form of entertainment but also as a valuable tool in clinical and public health settings to enhance overall quality of life.
Whether you have an exam in 10 minutes or need support during a stressful moment, this platform adapts to your needs — fitting smoothly into daily life.
In many healthcare settings, both patients and clinicians experience emotional stress, burnout, anxiety, and a sense of human disconnection. Modern clinical systems prioritize efficiency, speed, and measurable outcomes, often leaving limited space for emotional processing and personal support. Research suggests that stress and anxiety can amplify pain perception and negatively affect recovery outcomes.
Despite this connection, pain management in healthcare continues to rely primarily on pharmacological interventions, which might not fully address a patient's emotional needs. Additionally, many patients struggle to express their emotions verbally, especially when dealing with chronic illness or intense medical treatments.
Patients and clinicians face stress with few non-clinical outlets for emotional processing.
Emotional needs are often overlooked in traditional pain management approaches.
Many patients struggle to express how they feel verbally, especially during intense treatment.
Music therapy requires certified therapists and is not always accessible in every healthcare setting.
Health Harmonies offers a web-based platform that provides a personalized music intervention combined with guided journaling to help individuals manage stress and emotional wellbeing. This tool aims to empower patients by offering a self-managed, accessible platform for emotional support through music intervention therapy.
Individuals can input their emotional state at the beginning of each session. This information helps tailor their music experience based on their current mood.
The platform generates music recommendations based on user's mood, preferences, language, culture, and previous listening history. These playlists vary in tempo and energy level to best fit emotional needs.
After each music session, users are encouraged to reflect on how the music made them feel, helping them gain emotional awareness and better manage their emotions. The purpose is to help users process their emotional response and provide a place for non-verbal expression.
Session data is collected anonymously to improve recommendations and support research, while keeping personal information private.
Reduce Stress and Anxiety: By offering personalized music and guided journaling, we expect users to have lower stress levels after the experience and improved emotional regulation.
Increase Emotional Awareness: The journaling encourages patients to reflect on their feelings and helps them to better manage them over time.
The integration of music therapy and guided journaling in healthcare settings has proven to help reduce stress, anxiety, and pain perception, while enhancing emotional well-being. Our platform aims to improve emotional awareness and management by providing a personalized music therapy experience combined with reflective journaling. Music therapy has long been recognized for its emotional benefits, but existing solutions often lack personalization and fail to encourage emotional processing. Health Harmonies addresses these gaps by offering music interventions that adapt to individual emotional states and cultural backgrounds.
Current music interventions in healthcare fall into three categories: clinical music therapy, passive listening, and digital music tools. However, they often lack personalization and fail to address patients' emotional needs holistically.
Clinical music therapy, while effective, requires certified therapists and is not always accessible in every healthcare setting. Passive listening and many digital music tools tend to be generic and do not foster emotional reflection or non-verbal expression. There is a need for a solution that offers accessible, personalized, and emotionally supportive interventions that integrate seamlessly into healthcare environments.
Our research consisted of an initial background pre-survey, followed by a music-based intervention and guided journaling through our designed website, and concluded with a post-survey evaluating the impact of the music experience and reflective activities.
Based on feedback from our pre-survey, we redesigned our platform to focus on an interactive emotional processing system with quick mood check-ins and short guided journaling. Users then engaged with the Health Harmonies platform and completed a post-intervention survey.
The revised design shifted toward:
Engagement Tracking: We tracked session frequency, session length, and features used by participants to identify trends and maximize platform efficiency.
Stress & Anxiety Levels: Participants rated their perceived stress and anxiety on a 0-10 scale before and after each session
Emotional Awareness: Participants rated their ability to identify and express emotions using a Likert scale
In the future, we plan to test the Health Harmonies platform through a full pre-post intervention design with a larger, more diverse participant pool. Future research may investigate:

Health Harmonies is a collaborative effort by Group 9, bringing together diverse expertise in research, design, and technology.
"I really enjoy working with my team, and ideas really come together when all of us from different backgrounds can contribute our own perspectives and strengths. This project taught me how important it is to listen and understand others' perspectives. The challenges made us stronger!"
"I learned a lot about the technical and project design angles from our design and technology leads. Collaborating with others is essential in creating large-scale, multi-faceted projects because every individual contributes something important to the team."
